Aroostook County, from the Indian word for beautiful river, is the northern most portion of Maine. The largest county in Maine it is larger than Rhode Island and Connecticut combined. Take I-95 north towards Canada and the last stop in the U.S.A. is in Houlton, Maine which is in Aroostook County.

Aroostook County includes, among many others, the cities and towns of

Presque Isle, Caribou, Houlton, Fort Fairfield, and Mars Hill.

U.S. Customs building in Houlton, ME

I-95 north to Belleville, NB (New Brunswick) Canada is on the right. Canadian customs can be seen as the tiny building in the background on the right. Passenger cars would stop here, at U.S. customs,  when entering the U.S.A. There is no need for automobiles to stop at U.S. Customs when leaving the U.S.A.

When I am traveling to Presque Isle, Maine I usually stop off in Houlton, Maine to fill-up my car with gas at the Irving Mainway right off I-95. I may also stop at the State Tourism facility next to I-95 and retrieve specific information on Aroostook County activities.

Presque Isle, Maine

The most populous city in Aroostook County, Maine, Presque Isle is located about 45 minutes north of Houlton, Maine. Take I-95 north all the way up until you are about one mile from the Canadian border. This is the Route one exit in Houlton, ME. Take Route 1 north to Presque Isle.

Mars Hill, Maine

A nice diner in Aroostook County is Al's Diner in Mars Hill. I ate here on January 20, 2002 . While riding my snowmobile back from Houlton I stopped in Mars Hill for some food.

I had some delicious scallops, baked potato, plenty of coffee (zero booze when driving a snowmobile), salad and cheesecake.

-------

Hard to believe that it was 5 years ago today, January 21 , that Al's Diner dinner left me in bulk while sitting on the throne. I remember that it was a delicious meal with great service. That entire trip, my first to Maine, was fantastic. Never to be duplicated. Although I had a nice trip to Bar Harbor, Lubec a few years back and great trips elsewhere.

Right now its 12:26 1/21/2007. Exactly 5 years ago I was at the Presque Isle airport taking pictures of a Fed Ex Cargo Plane. Driving in my car and sightseeing.
